Judianne
Kellaway, MD
Dr. Judianne
Kellaway, a vitreo-retinal and general ophthalmologist, has a
relationship with Memorial Hermann Hospital that began early –
she was born at Hermann Hospital. She grew up in Houston, and
her medical career began at Baylor College of Medicine's Division
of Neurophysiology, where she worked as a laboratory technician.
She can pinpoint the day she decided to become an ophthalmologist.
During an instrumentation laboratory, medical students were learning
to use ophthalmoscopes, and she was able to look into the back
of a friend's eye. The view was incredibly fascinating, according
to her, and her career path was set. Dr. Kellaway graduated from
The University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1987, completed
a year in Internal Medicine at Cooper Hospital in Camden, New
Jersey, then returned to Houston to complete a clinical pre-residency
fellowship under the direction of Dr. Ruiz. Later, after completing
her ophthalmology residency, she received subspecialty training
in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous with Paul C.
Salmonsen, MD. In addition to her appointment as Clinical Associate
Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science,
she is Director of the Residency Program and serves on several
hospital committees at the Medical School and Memorial Hermann
Hospital.
Dr. Kellaway
loves to teach and believes it is one of her more important departmental
activities. In addition to instructing medical students and ophthalmology
residents, Dr. Kellaway has initiated ophthalmology programs in
the Medical School’s Department of Internal Medicine and
Department of Emergency Medicine to help educate the medical students
and residents in those departments. Involved in the community,
Dr. Kellaway was instrumental in the conceptual design for the
eye exhibit at Houston’s Museum of Health and Medical Science,
where she also serves as an advisor for the Eye Exhibit. She lectures
to high school, college, and adult groups about eye safety, common
eye disorders, and the prevention of eye diseases.
